Improving Broadband and Cellular Access

Ahead of November 5th Fall 2020 Budget, the Province released some more information about it's investment to improve and expand broadband and cellular access. AMCTO's pre-budget submission emphasized the need for broadband infrastructure investments.

The Province is committing an additional $680 million in the Budget for this purpose. It appears that $150 million of this funding committment will contribute to the funding envelope for the Improving Connectivity for Ontario (ICON) Program, the provincial portion of which would be topped up to $300 million.

This investment builds on a previously announced $315 million to support Up to Speed: Ontario's Broadband and Cellular Action Plan. It also builds on the recently released Ontario Onwards: Ontario's COVID-19 Action Plan for a People Focused Government which AMCTO blogged about previously. Improving access to broadband and cellular service is one of several projects listed in the Action Plan.

Stay tuned to this blog space for details about the Provincial Budget as AMCTO will be analyzing the proposals for impacts to our members.
