Yesterday Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell read the Speech from the Throne, opening the second session of the 42nd Parliament. The Speech outlined the Provincial Government’s legislative objectives for the next 8 months, with the next Provincial Election set for June 2, 2022.

The speech mentioned cooperation with municipal leaders in achieving high vaccine rates and the need for continued cooperation with municipalities going forward to tackle social and economic challenges.

Some Provincial priorities mentioned that may be of interest to municipalities include continued investment in roads, highways and transit, calling on the federal government to increase the Canada Health Transfer, and strengthening relationships with Indigenous peoples through playing an active role in reconciliation.

The Government also committed to an economic and fiscal recovery that is fueled by economic growth, without “painful” spending cuts. In our delegations with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the Ministry of Finance at the 2021 AMO Conference, AMCTO emphasized the importance of maintaining existing funding streams for municipalities as the Province looks towards recovery.
