Bill 204, Helping Tenants and Small Businesses Act, 2020 received Royal Assent today which makes the bill law. The Act amends various other pieces of legislation to create a a single registry of electors for municipal and provincial elections.

The changes take effect January 1, 2024, ahead of the scheduled municipal elections in 2026. We had nicknamed this effort the 'municipal voters' list' project.

The accuracy of this list is essential  to AMCTO members who are responsible for administering local government elections. This is particularly important should alternative voting mechanisms such as internet voting or wider mail-in voting be utilized to administer an election during an emergency such as the COVID-19 health pandemic.

A big thank you to all of our municipal experts who have helped move this policy issue forward over the years.

We look forward to working with Elections Ontario on the next steps!

Edited: The relevant schedules of the Act are not yet in force and are subject to proclamation by the Lieutenant Governor at a future date.
