2017-10-05 11:00:00 AM

Yesterday, the Government of Alberta unveiled its proposed plan for the legalization and sale of recreational cannabis. Key features of the plan include:

  • Establishing a minimum age of 18 to buy or use cannabis

  • Allowing public possession of 30 grams (purchases will also be limited to 30 grams)

  • Establishing sales in speciality stores, separate from alcohol and tobacco

  • Prohibiting smoking or vaping in vehicles (including by passengers)

  • Requiring public smoking and vaping to comply with existing tobacco laws

  • Allowing home-growing of up to four plans

  • Prohibiting outdoor growing

While some of these measures align with Ontario's proposed plan, other areas are divergent.
