In a decisive 32-12 vote yesterday, the City of Toronto became the first Ontario municipality to declare its intention to regulate Uber. The move came as municipalities across the province have been struggling to respond to the ride-sharing platform, and other new services that now make up the “sharing economy.” City staff will report back to Council in the spring on how they plan to incorporate Uber into the City’s pre-existing taxi regulations. The City also passed a related to measure to reduce the starting fare for a traditional taxi from $4.25 to $3.25, as an attempt to help taxi drivers compete with the new service.
