Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney has announced that 111 Ontario municipalities will receive $365.3 million to invest in local transit through the Gas Tax Program.
The Gas Tax Program is a long-term source of transit funding for municipalities and is determined by the number of litres of gasoline sold in the province. Two cents per litre of provincial gas tax revenues are provided to local governments. Funding can be used to upgrade infrastructure, increase accessibility, purchase transit vehicles, add more routes, and extend hours of service.
In a move to cut red tape, the government this year is removing the baseline spending requirement for municipalities and allowing them to submit a digital copy of their municipal by-law.
