City of Toronto Proposes Regulations for Short-term Rentals

2017-06-20 4:57:20 PM

The City of Toronto has tabled its proposals for regulating short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, VRBO and others. Under the proposed new rules, property owners in Toronto would have to comply with a series of rules before making a property available for short-term rentals. The proposed regulations put forward by the City include:

  • Banning people from listing units where they don't live

  • Amending zoning bylaws to create a special "short-term rental" category

  • Requiring short-term rental companies (such as Airbnb) to acquire licenses to operate

  • Creating a registry for anyone operating a short-term rental unit
