FCM Offering Grants to Projects that Promote Women’s Participation in Local Government

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is offering funding for local initiatives that strengthen opportunities or reduce barriers for women to participate in municipal politics and local government.

Offered through FCM’s Toward Parity in Municipal Politics program, successful projects are eligible for up to $5,000 in funding. The grants are meant to seed funding to a new idea to gain support for gender equality in a community or support an existing initiative that has shown promise.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:

  • Applications must be led by a FCM member or affiliate member (such as provincial or territorial association)

  • Have a partnership between a municipal or local government and a women’s organization, youth or community group working on women’s issues or inclusion

  • Must focus on increasing opportunities or reducing barriers for women in municipal politics

  • Must be non-partisan and funds cannot be used to support candidates, contribute to a political campaign or to a political party

  • Must align with FCM's following four pillars: 

    • Improved access to information

    • Enhanced inclusion

    • Increased support

    • Improved governance and structure 

  • Project must be implemented between mid-September 2019 and June 2020.

It should be noted that projects that promote diversity, inclusion, and integration of youth will be prioritized.
