Implementation of Policing Reforms Halted

2018-07-04 5:24:09 PM

In a letter to Ontario police associations, Premier Doug Ford announced that the government of Ontario is postponing the implementation of elements of Bill 175 (the Safer Ontario Act), the Liberal government's reforms to public safety and policing. It's not clear which parts of the legislation will changed, which will be implemented, and which will be removed. The first piece of Bill 175 that was supposed to enter into effect on June 30, 2018, was the Ontario Special Investigations Unit Act, a bill designed to strengthen police oversight. The Premier has said only that the government will conduct "a full and thorough review of the legislation" and "fix policing legislation."
