The Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO) was one of almost 30 organizations on Tuesday that presented their pre-budget submission to the province’s Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs.
In his presentation Jamie McGarvey, AMO’s President, notably highlighted the critical importance of the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) for municipalities and aimed to convince the government to not reduce funding. Describing the fund as the “main general assistance grant”, McGarvey spoke of how reliant municipalities were on the OMPF and that reduced transfers would result in local councils having to compensate through a reduction in local services or an increase to property taxes.
AMO’s President also asked the government to honour several campaign promises, including an increase in funding for the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund from the 2018 amount of $230 million to $300 million.
