According to comments made by Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) Ted McMeekin in year-end media interviews, the government's changes to the Municipal Elections Act will include new measures to make municipal election campaigns shorter, and give municipalities the option of banning corporate or union donations. These are both changes that AMCTO advocated for in its submission on the MEA. As part of its changes to the MEA, the government will also move forward with its plans to give municipalities the option of using ranked ballots, and introduce new restrictions on campaign spending, and a clearer compliance audit process. Before the holidays MMAH released a consultation summary, which can be accessed here.
