The government of British Columbia has announced that Peter Fassbender, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development (and the Minister Responsible for Translink), is initiating consultations on Uber. As part of its consultations, the Minister will talk to municipalities and other stakeholders about how to handle sharing economy services. The consultations follow comments from Premier Christy Clark that the sharing economy needs to be regulated, and from Transportation Minister Todd Stone that sharing economy services are "inevitable."
As part of its pre-budget recommendations, AMCTO is urging the province of Ontario to take over the responsibility for regulating the sharing economy.
