Below is a summary of Private Members’ Bills from Queen’s Park that may be of relevance to Ontario’s local governments.

It is worth noting that private members’ bill often do not receive Third Reading and Royal Assent.

Bill 75, 9-1-1 Everywhere in Ontario Act, 2019, would require that infrastructure for 9-1-1 calls be in place in all municipalities in Ontario. (Status: Referred to Standing Committee on Social Policy - May 2019)

Bill 88, Planning Amendment Act, 2019, would affect the ways in which individuals and other entities may deal with planning permissions. (Status: Referred to the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs - May 2019)

Bill 128, Ontario Water Resources Amendment Act, 2019, would add an exception to Section 34 of the Ontario Water Resources Act for taking water for constructing, operating, altering, improving or requiring a dam if it is associated with the production of electricity and if it done in accordance with an approval or compliance with a Minister’s order under the Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act. (Status: First Reading Carried - June 2019).

Bill 165, Ontario Climate Crisis Strategy for the Public Sector Act, would establish a climate crisis strategy for the public sector and would include public sector reports reports on energy and other related mattes. (Status: First Reading Carried - December 2019). 

Bill 173Ontario Day Act, 2020, would proclaim June 1st as Ontario Day. (Status: Referred to Standing Committee on Regulations and Private Bills - February 2020). 

Bill 174, Ditch the Switch Act, 2020, would seek to amend the Time Act to use daylight saving time all year-round (Status: Order referred to Standing Committee on Regulations and Private Bills - March 2020).

Bill 176, Maternal Mental Health Act, would seek to proclaim the first Wednesday of May in each year as Maternal Mental Health Day and require the Minister of Health conduct a comprehensive review of maternal mental health and prepare a Provincial Framework and Action plan on the issue. (Status: First Reading Carried - February 2020). 

Bill 179, Assessment Amendment Act (Areas in Transition), would seek to exclude speculative sales of property from the determination of the current value of land in the commercial or industry property class in specified municipal areas (Status: First Reading Carried - March 2020). 

Bill 177, Sikh Genocide Awareness Week Act, 2020, would seek to proclaim the first seven days of November in each year to bring awareness and acknowledge the campaign of genocide against Sikhs by the state of India. Sikhs make up about 1.4% of Ontario's population. (Status: Order referred to Standing Committee on Justice Policy - March 2020). 

Bill 178Black Mental Health Day Act, would seek to proclaim the first Monday in March every year as Black Mental Health Day. (Status: First Reading Carried - March 2020). 

Bill 180, Somali Heritage Week Act, would seek to proclaim the weekof June 25 to July 1 as Somali Heritage Week and recognize the economic, political, social, and cultural achievements/contributions of Somali Canadians in Ontarian society. (Status: First Reading Carried - March 2020). 

Bill 182, Franco-Ontarian Emblem Act, would seek to recognize the Franco-Ontarian flag as an emblem of Ontario. (Status: Order referred to Standing Committee on Regulations and Private Bills - March 2020).
