The Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO) is calling on the Government of Ontario to cover the costs of cannabis legalization and provide municipalities with a share of the revenues generated by cannabis sales. AMO's request is based on the potential for cannabis legalization to increase the costs of policing, by-law enforcement, public health, and fire services, which are all municipal responsibilities. Based on its preliminary estimates, AMO believes that cannabis legalization would add more than $80 million to local budgets each year.
