Restoring Ontario's Competitiveness Act Passes

2019-04-02 4:48:31 PM

The Ontario Government today passed Bill 66, Restoring Ontario’s Competitiveness Act, 2019. The Act will reduce regulatory burdens in 12 sectors, including agrifood, manufacturing, construction, and the auto sector.

The Government says this Act also will cut business costs, harmonize regulatory requirements with other jurisdictions, end duplication and reduce barriers to investment.

Notable amendments to Bill 66 include repealing Schedule 10 to the Planning Act due to criticism during the Bill's First Reading. The proposed change would have allowed local municipalities to pass “open-for-business” planning by-laws. It would have impacted significant water protection acts, most notably The Greenbelt Act, which is the world’s largest permanently protected green space.
